S.H.E. [Zhong Guo Hua] [Chinese]
Album: Play
Pin Yin and Translation Credit: tammiest

* The translation... please remember that I'm translating tongue twisters here. Also, 扁擔 = bo staff, a pole used both in martial arts and to hoist buckets of water in ancient China (think Disney's Mulan), although that's the Japanese name for it... I couldn't find the English-Chinese equivalent.

Bian dan kuan Ban deng chang
The bo staff is wide; the bench is long

Bian dan xiang bang zai ban den shang
The bench wants to tie itself to the ends of the bo staff

Bian dan kuan Ban deng chang
The bo staff is wide; the bench is long

Bian dan xiang bang zai ban deng shang
The bench wants to tie itself to the ends of the bo staff

The bo staff is wide; the bench is long

Bian dan xiang bang zai ban deng shang
The bench wants to tie itself to the ends of the bo staff

Ban deng bu rang bian dan bang zai ban deng shang
The bo staff won't let the bench tie itself to the ends of the bo staff

Bian dan pian yao bang zai ban den shang
Instead, the bo staff wants to tie itself to the bench

Ban deng pian pian bu rang bian dan bang zai na ban deng shang
The bench won't let the bo staff tie itself to the bench

So is the bo staff wide or the bench long?

The younger brother says, "The swan is white."

E yao guo he He yao du e
The swan wants to cross the river; the river wants the swan to cross

Bu zhi dao na e guo he hai shi he du e
Don't know if the swan is crossing the river or the river is crossing the swan

You ge xiao hai jiao Xiao Du
There once was a child named XiaoDu

Turned around and saw an eagle catching a rabbit

Fang xia bu Ge xia cu
He put down the cloth, cut loose the vinegar

Shang qian qu zhui ying han tu
Began to chase the eagle and the rabbit

Fei le ying Pao le tu
The eagle flew away; the rabbit ran away

Sa le cu Shi le bu
He spilled the vinegar, got the cloth wet

Zui shuo tui Tui shuo zui
His mouth blamed his legs, his legs blamed his mouth

Zui shuo tui Ai pao tui
His mouth blamed his legs, those legs that love to run

Tui zhuo zui Ai mai zui
His legs blamed his mouth, the mouth that loves to run

Moving just the mouth and not the legs

Guang dong tui Bu dong zui
Moving just the legs and not the mouth

Bu ru bu zhang tui huo zui
Might as well not have either legs or mouth

Dao di shi na zui shuo tui
Did the mouth blame the legs...

Hai shi tui shuo zui
... or the legs blame the mouth?

Fun with Chinese Characters 010 – 天 [tiān]

Posted Posted in Anytime Chinese

When you add a single horizontal line to a man – 人 [rén], it becomes big – 大 [dà] and when you add another line above big, it becomes heaven – 天 [tiān]. So heaven is bigger than big.

Ancient wisdom showed that man, no matter how big, still cannot win over heaven.  We need to be humble, follow the law of nature in order to lead a successful & happy life.

Besides heaven, 天 [tiān] can also mean sky, day, season, on top, places where deities live, celestial & nature.
